When tragedy strikes, those involved face the predictable
symptoms characterizing traumatic stress. Critical Incident Stress
Management (CISM) has been found to mitigate the impact of traumatic
stress and facilitate individual and organizational recovery. Developed
by Crisis Care Network, this training series provides a comprehensive
guide to those organizing and delivering crisis response services.
Consistent with the National Institute of Mental Health's standards
for "psychological first aid", this four volume set centers around
a dramatized workplace shooting case study and outlines an effective
phase-sensitive, multi-component response. Combining didactic and
role play demonstrations specific to the case study, each volume
equips the learner to gain a thorough understanding of crisis response
tools.
Volume 1, Overview
The first of four in Crisis Care Network's video training series,
Volume 1 dramatizes a workplace shooting and outlines crisis management
intervention strategies used to help employees recover and return
to work and life. This volume addresses the importance of applying
the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) standards for "psychological
first aid" and presents Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM)
as a best practices approach to the delivery of NIMH-recommended
phasic, multi-component services. The continuum of CISM services
and its component interventions are described for application within
various circles of impact.
Volume 2, The Crisis Management
Briefing
The Crisis Management Briefing (CMB) serves as a helpful intervention
for large groups of individuals who have been secondarily traumatized.
This video contains three component parts:
- a didactic presentation outlining most effective use of the
CMB
- a dramatized workplace shooting for use as a case study
- a CMB demonstration specific to the case study.
Volume 3, The Defusing
Typically occurring within the first 12 hours of a tragedy, the
defusing is a small group intervention for those immediately impacted
by the event. This video contains three component parts:
- a didactic presentation outlining timing, goals, structure,
and techniques
- a dramatized workplace shooting for use as a case study
- a defusing demonstration specific to the case study.
Volume 4, The Debriefing
The most commonly recognized CISM tool, the debriefing is a small
group intervention held 24-72 hours following the conclusion of
the traumatic incident. This video contains three component parts:
- a didactic presentation outlining timing, goals, structure,
and techniques
- a dramatized workplace shooting for use as a case study
- a debriefing demonstration specific to the case study.
