The Multihazard Mitigation Council
(MMC) was established as a council of NIBS in November 1997. In July 1998,
NIBS entered into a 60-month indefinite quantity contract with FEMA. A
number of task orders have been issued under the contract and additional
projects have been undertaken using other contractual mechanisms. Current
projects include planning for an independent study of the Afuture savings@
from various mitigation activities; administration for FEMA of the FEMA/MMC
Community Planning Fellowship program; organization and conduct of the
FEMA Emergency Management Institutes Multihazard Building Design Summer
Institute (MBDSI); development of a manual for building officials to enhance
their role in disaster mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery;
and determining how graduate schools with mitigation planning courses
developed and integrated such material into their curricula and why those
schools without such courses do not have them.
