Exercises Crucial for Effective Disaster Planning

The California training session is part of an emergency preparedness course that offers search and rescue techniques, radio communication, bandaging and splinting wounds, how to use a fire extinguisher, and the way to properly rescue a person trapped under a heavy object. In Queensbury, N.Y., 80 to 100 emergency responders and area hospitals participated in a practice exercise involving a fictitious shooting at the local school district. New York City’s Office of Emergency Management conducted a large-scale terror response drill in Queens that involved 800 responders. The drill simulated what might happen if a car bomb exploded on a busy city street during rush hour and was followed by a second “explosion” outside the Queens Midtown Tunnel. The European Union plans to hold its first ever pan-European cybersecurity exercise, dubbed Cyber Europe 2010. EU member countries, joined by Switzerland, Norway and Iceland, will encourage cooperation in defending critical infrastructure networks. “It’s basically a way of building trust among member states,” says Vangelis Ouzounis, senior expert for IT security at the European Network and Information Security Agency.
