Kenya Lacks Cybersecurity

Business in Kenya are increasing their online presence without shoring up their information security systems.

In an article on The East African website, Philip Ngunjiri says these companies face the threat of significant financial losses through theft or data corruption. Lionel Mbogho, an IT security expert who has operated in the US for several years, said Kenyans lack the advanced security systems found in developed countries.

According to Avinash Ramtohul, Oracle East-Africa Information security solutions manager for Middle-East and Africa, Kenyans must realize the threat is nothing like ten years ago when “one of the worst things that could happen was someone breaking into your website and changing the front page.” He said local businesses have been hit hard by data theft.

“Hackers,” said Mbogho, “have a considerable technical ingenuity and an anarchic capacity for destroying secure systems.”
