Florida Braced for Big Thaw

Florida is at risk of three kinds of flooding: Areal floods from prolonged or intense rainfall resulting in overflowing waterways; flash floods after a rain event or a sudden release of water held by a dam or levee; or river flooding. Officials have published a press release to raise awareness of the risk, especially in light of recent severe weather events.

This week is National Flood Awareness Week, when the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA) partner to raise awareness of how floods occur, what the hazards are and how to protect lives and property.

The press release includes safety rules to follow, such as monitoring the NOAA Weather Radio or other news sources for vital weather-related information, getting to higher ground during a flood, and never driving through flooded roadways. It also includes links to government information on flood protection.
