Obama Cuts Security Red Tape

Currently, in the White House, if a document is not deemed “top secret” it is slotted into one of more than 100 subcategories of sensitivity. And each of these categories, due to how sensitive government reports, guidelines and advisories are, has its own rules for how the information can be shared.

In an article on the Wall Street Journal website, Cam Simpson and Siobhan Gorman say President Obama wants those categories whittled down “to one, ‘Controlled Unclassified Information’” according to a White House official.

The order follows the President’s request, in May, for a task force to study barriers to sharing sensitive information, Simpson and Gorman write. The report and its 40 recommendations are scheduled for release next Tuesday.
