ORGANIZATION SPOTLIGHT

Central US Earthquake Consortium
Established in 1983 with funding support from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, CUSEC's primary mission is, "... the reduction of deaths, injuries, property damage and economic losses resulting from earthquakes in the Central United States." CUSEC serves as a "coordinating hub" for the region, performing the critical role of coordinating the multi-state efforts of the central region. Its coordinating role is largely facilitative and not as the primary implementer of emergency management functions which is the responsibility of each individual state. The four-outreach goals address the planning, preparation and knowledge processes. The two remaining foundation goals, resource development and constituency building, provide the organization with the structure and influence to accomplish the four outreach goals. www.cusec.org

NEW ADDITIONS

Disaster Preparedness And Emergency Association
The Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Response Association, International (DERA) was founded in 1962 to assist communities worldwide in disaster preparedness, response and recovery, and to serve as a professional association linking professionals, volunteers, and organizations active in all phases of emergency preparedness and management. DERA currently has active members around the world, representing national governments, non-profit associations, official agencies and departments, educational institutions, corporations, small business concerns, emergency management professionals, researchers, and volunteers. www.disasters.org

Disaster Recovery Institute International
DRI International (DRII) was first formed in 1988 as the Disaster Recovery Institute in St. Louis, MO. A group of professionals from the industry and from Washington University in St. Louis forecast the need for comprehensive education in business continuity. Alliances with academia helped shape early research and curriculum development. The group also understood that individual certification and establishing a common body of knowledge (standards) could only enhance industry professionalism. As a result, the new non-profit organization established its goals to: promote a base of common knowledge for the business continuity planning/disaster recovery industry through education, assistance, and publication of the standard resource base; certify qualified individuals in the discipline; and promote the credibility and professionalism of certified individuals. www.drii.org
