National Volunteering Organizations Active In Disaster
NVOAD may have begun by serving as a point of communication among voluntary organizations engaged in disaster response, but the founders had much more in mind. From its very early days the goal was to bring national voluntary organizations active in disaster together to foster more effective service to people affected by disaster. The key words for the principles have been cooperation, coordination, communication, education, mitigation, and convening mechanisms, to which was later added outreach. The first statement of principles and structure of NVOAD was adopted at the annual meeting on January 30, 1978. It contained descriptions of purpose, structure and program of NVOAD and was published as an introduction to the NVOAD National Directory, the first edition of which was published in 1979. These principles of purpose and structure have been revised to become more clearly articulated over the years as NVOAD has expanded in function and grown in stature. www.nvoad.org

They represent the concerns and needs of watershed project sponsors at the national level. The NWC offers assistance on watershed planning when requested, sponsors biennial national watershed conferences, other specialty resource conferences, publishes a monthly electronic newsletter, Watershed e-News and conference proceedings. The NWC provides resource testimony before Congress on watershed programs and policy, and believes proper care of our nation’s natural resources a top national priority. The NWC is governed by a Steering Committee of over 30 conservation organizations. Associate membership is $20.00 annually for individuals and $50.00 for organizations. www.watershedcoalition.org

National Fire Protection Association
The mission of the international nonprofit NFPA is to reduce the worldwide burden of fire and other hazards on the quality of life by providing and advocating consensus codes and standards, research, training, and education. NFPA membership totals more than 79,000 individuals from around the world and more than 80 national trade and professional organizations. Established in 1896, NFPA serves as the world's leading advocate of fire prevention and is an authoritative source on public safety. In fact, NFPA's 300 codes and standards influence every building, process, service, design, and installation in the United States, as well as many of those used in other countries. NFPA's focus on true consensus has helped the association's code-development process earn accreditation from the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). www.nfpa.org

National Institute For Urban Search And Rescue
The NIUSR continues to work on the leading edge of strategic planning for the future in emergency response. The NIUSR finds ways to fill the gaps in national systems that are recognized as society and culture hurtle rapidly in this new millennium. What does it mean by "the future"? It means in the next 30 years, and perhaps the next 50 years. It does not mean the next quarterly program review, nor the next quarter's "bottom line." Watching the next quarter's bottom line did not help the buggy-whip company's future profits after Henry Ford built the Model A. Someone needs to watch the strategic future and perhaps suggest a new product, system or focus. The NIUSR finds that the combination of the best of the known with the riskier path of the new can be a serendipitous mix for long-range success. www.niusr.org

National Safety Council
The National Safety Council is a nonprofit, nongovernmental, international public service organization dedicated to protecting life and promoting health. The NSC is a membership organization, founded in 1913 and chartered by the U.S. Congress in 1953. National Emergency Number Association
NENA's mission is to foster the technological advancement, availability, and implementation of a universal emergency telephone number system. In carrying out its mission, NENA promotes research, planning, training and education. The protection of human life, the preservation of property and the maintenance of general community security are among NENA's objectives. www.nena.org

National Environmental Health Association
Drawing on the original effort that led to the creation of NEHA, the association today stands as a strong professional society with over 4,500 members across the nation. Clearly NEHA’s mission, “to advance the environmental health and protection professional for the purpose of providing a healthful environment for all,” is as relevant today as it was when the organization was founded. Advancement has been defined by NEHA in terms of both education and motivation. The basis for the association’s activities is the belief that the professional who is educated and motivated is the professional who will make the greatest contribution to the healthful environmental goals, which we all seek. Accordingly, great emphasis is placed on providing, through each of NEHA’s programs, both an educational as well as a motivational opportunity. At NEHA’s conferences, for example, tremendous attention is paid to developing a quality educational program that not only imparts knowledge to the attendee but, also, through the very quality of the presentations, inspires the attendee to do more upon returning to his or her job. www.neha.org

International Disaster Recovery Association
IDRA is a group originally comprised of those having a special interest in the voice, data, image, and sensory telecommunications aspects of Disaster Recovery Planning (DRP), Contingency Planning and Business Continuation. Members come from Argentina, Israel, New Zealand, Puerto Rico, Singapore, Canada and the United States of America. IDRA was founded in 1989 and has its offices in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts, USA. IDRA is different from other disaster recovery organizations due to its special interest groups (SIGs) concentrating on specific contingency planning areas. IDRA holds annual, multi-day conferences at which all topics and exhibits are oriented towards its SIGs. Seminars and workshops are presented upon request. Presentations and cooperative meetings with other groups are scheduled on an as-needed basis. IDRA does produce additional educational sessions. These subject areas include workplace violence, physical security, executive protection, terrorism, notification systems, policy and procedures, present system documentation and job descriptions. www.idra.com
