Lessons Learned in Business Continuity Certification Process

Altius Associates is an independent fund-of-funds and segregated account manager with offices in the U.K., the U.S. and Singapore. In 2009, the firm decided to commit to a business continuity management system of the highest quality.

This case study details how business continuity consultants Biscon Planning Ltd worked with Altius through the certification process. It is primarily used in Europe, but is also increasingly being adopted in the U.S.

Successful business continuity plans are “a small element of the process needed for a full system. The focus of the standard is as much about unifying management systems as having a plan which can deal with the unexpected,” writes Mick Bayne, a Biscon director.

He goes through the six elements Altius needed for its internal audit. The firm also had to conduct and document reviews, maintenance, assessing competence, embedding the system, controlling documents and records, and raising preventive actions and corrective actions.

Attaining registration is not a one-time investment, Bayne says, as resources will be required to maintain the standard over the coming years.
