Growing Virtualization Means More Security Needed

It’s not that virtualization is, in itself, a security risk. Undertaking virtualization projects without fully involving the company’s security team, however, is a common mistake that compromises security.

In an article on the InfoWorld website, Jon Brodkin says 60 percent of virtual servers are less secure than physical ones according to research from analyst firm Gartner. The article outlines common security risks associated with virtualization deployments, including failing to involve information security professionals in the initial planning stages.

The good news is that as virtualization grows, Gartner predicts security will improve. The firm projects that by 2015, only 30 percent of virtualized servers will be less secure than their physical predecessors.

“This state of affairs will remain true until 2012, but security should improve substantially after that point,” Gartner said.
