El Nino Could Bring Winter Tornadoes

The US National Weather Service is warning Florida residents of an “active weather pattern” that will increase the chances of tornadoes this winter.

An article on the Tampa Bay Tribune website says that while El Nino helps prevent storms from forming during the active hurricane season from summer to late fall, it has a flip side of “potentially wicked winter weather.”

The article lists several winter tornadoes in the Florida area that have caused past devastation and deaths, and warns that winter tornadoes often occur at night when people are asleep and didn’t see them coming. The Tribune recommends that every home, business or RV be equipped with a NOAA Weather Radio. These cost between $20 and $100 and are the only way to receive round-the-clock broadcasts from weather service offices.
