How Zombies Can Save Your Life

What are the similarities between surviving an earthquake and a zombie apocalypse? For one, you would need almost the exact same survival kit, according to www.army.mil. An earthquake survival kit contains enough food, water, and medical supplies to support a large group of people for multiple days, or at least until more supplies are found, or help reaches your location.

This is a lesson that Max Brooks, author of The Zombie Survival Guide and World War Z, has learned from various agencies such as the Center for Disease Control (CDC) and the U.S. military over the years. The CDC even has a “Zombie Plan” to help get the younger generation interested in developing a survival plan. And while the prospect of a zombie outbreak actually happening are nil, the items useful for surviving one can help in a real-world situation.

Brooks took part in a recent hurricane rehearsal at Fort Sam Houston hosted by the U.S. Army North earlier in April. During the exercise, the various participants shared their knowledge and expertise when it came to surviving a disaster. Participants also took part in a phase-by-phase hurricane scenario involving two different storm systems building to hurricane level and coming ashore in Gulfport, Mississippi, and Norfolk, Virginia.

Each of the phases of the hurricanes corresponded to the necessary actions taken by Joint Force Land Component Commander (JFLCC) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). These phases ranged from the initial formation of the storms, to anticipating where they would make landfall and the impact they would have, to the responses once the storms hit. They also included what would happen during the incident, providing the stability necessary to affect a successful recovery, and the transition of the recovery from the military to local and state agencies.

Officials with the exercise stressed that a hurricane was just one of the many incidents that can occur at any time around the world. And that preparation was the single most important consideration while anticipating these types of events. In essence, having a kit to meet one disaster means that more than likely you will be prepared for any of the other possible scenarios.
